Toric contact lenses have been designed to correct astigmatism, which is a structural disorder in the eye, or eyes, that often cause blurred vision.
Toric contact lenses are specifically designed to address the abnormal shape of the cornea (corneal astigmatism) or lens (lenticular astigmatism) by altering the focusing power, they are also stabilised either by a thickening or a weighting at the bottom of the lens to provide stability during blinking to help create a smooth, clear visual experience.
All contact lenses require a power (PWR) this can be in the form of a plus (+) for longsightedness or a minus (-) for shortsightedness, a toric contact lenses has two other reading that are important the Cyl and the Axis.
The Cyl on a toric contact lens prescription refers to the amount of astigmatism you have and will be in proceeded by a minus (-) sign. If your prescription has a figure i.e -1.25 in the Cyl box then this would indicate you have astigmatism.
Once it has been determined that you have astigmatism and how much, this then needs to be corrected, this is where the Axis comes in.
The Axis indicates the orientation of the astigmatism. In a contact lens prescription the Axis will be a multiple of 10 and up to 180, however in a glasses prescription it will be a multiple of 2.5 degrees.

I have used these lenses for two years now and are impressed by the performance. In the beginning they felt a bit thick (coming from Freq Excel) but once you get used to them you really appriciate the extra comfort that comes with not having to worry about getting dry eyes. I also think the sharpness is really impressive and event though I have 110 astigmatism I always have a perfect vision. Sleeping with them is not what I normally do even though it works for a night or two.
I usually wear the Purevision Toric extended wear and went for these as I thought they would be a step up, and WHEN they work they are, my vision was noticeably sharper. However the lenses do not sit on my eye nearly as comfortably as the other Pure vision lenses, they seem to move around a lot more leading to blurred vision, so much so that after three weeks I've gone back to the old lenses. A shame, as when they work they are really very good indeed.
